So Cash for Clunkers has been a big program and the subject of a lot of talk in the past couple of weeks.
The Sentinel has done a lot of coverage, including this story on how charities are taking a hit because of the program and of course how Sawgrass Ford decided to “crush” its’ clunkers using The INSTIGATOR monster truck.
As you know the dealers are responsible for destroying the engine of the vehicles so they cannot be resold after the dealerships are reimbursed for the vehicles. Choices are pouring a specific liquid, putting a hole in the engine, and crushing it!

Again here are the outtakes, with my photo slideshow of the event above . . . but these are more fun!

This guy was collecting trophies from the deflated vehicles . . .

Also is it bad to admit that aside from hearing commercials from MonsterJam throughout my childhood this is my first, real life Monster truck? I mean I know all the big ones like Grave Digger and Avenger but the Instigator, driven by Lionel Easley, is the first one I’ve ever seen in person.
Here is a clip from the 2008 Finals held in Las Vegas to show you what you’re missing.

So Wednesday was fun, I headed out with Amy Beth, another photographer at the Sun Sentinel to first photograph an elder at his church in Coral Springs, then a veteran returning to school at Florida Atlantic University where I shot some video and our final assignment at the Boca Raton Museum of Art.
For those of you new to the Broward County and Palm Beach County, the city of Boca Raton is akin to that of Scottsdale, Ariz. I mean odd part is that everyone in South Florida has a relative, friend or acquaintance in the desert.
Anyway Boca was my favorite assignment of the day and although I would love to post all the photos and the link to the slideshow here of those pics I can’t, because it hasn’t run yet. So I’m posting the out-takes that didn’t make the cut. I’ll post the link when it is published.
As for my personal life, etc. in South Florida I am loving it. While Broward at times resembles Maricopa County it is definitely unique. Did you know it was the birthplace of the hit show (going since 1989) COPS?
Broward is also home to the newest COPS style show, Police Women of Broward County.
Also a couple of excellent reporters at the Sentinel run a blog called Floriduh and everyday I read the posts and can’t help but bust out laughing. Apparently you can find stories from around the state posted here about everything from adult diaper fetishes and clueless thieves. Totally, I mean totally, worth checking out.

Tuesday was the start of my second week at the Sun Sentinel . . . I admit it kept me up at night during the weekend trying to think of what I wanted to do a story on and thinking wether it had been done before or not. But Tuesday was great, I think I have one of my ideas down and I am really enjoying the Sentinel as well as Florida.
Jackie Gleason, of Honneymooner fame was honored in South Florida by being placed on a stamp. These are the outtakes of that shoot for the Sun-Sentinel and here is the photo gallery from the Sun Sentinel site. Personally the first is my favorite . . .

Gleason’s widow was there and while she was very nice and smiling she teared up below when talking about him and placed a pin of the stamp on her blouse below.

Saturday’s senior prom at the Elks Lodge. Here is the link for the photo gallery that I shot alongside Sun Sentinel photographer Sarah Dussault. Today was a good day.

Imagine 15 years of nails this long. Shirley who I met today at a Senior Prom, where the most seniors of the groups were somewhere in their 80’s and 90’s, was one of the most interesting characters. I want to do a story on her nails, suffice to say I was enthralled as to every detail of their maintenance. Maybe it is because I’m a short nails kind of woman and any attempts at decently long nails fails miserably.

My first day at the Sun-Sentinel was interesting . . . still trying to form ideas about Florida and what I want to do for the next ten weeks. We covered a library for a story about tax issues and dora the explorer visitor at the children’s hospital.

I love my family, portraits as I get ready to leave Arizona for Florida

I tend to scare children with my camera, or at least I like to think it is the camera . . .

Mission of Mercy in Mesa, day two . . .

People begin to line up at 5am to secure one of five spots to see a doctor as a walk-in appointment. Here are some other photos:

Mission of Mercy sees over 40,000 patients. I wish I had more photos edited, but my computer won’t comply . . .

I am participating in a grant with the Virginia G. Piper Trust to cover a local non profit, here are a few of the first images. These were by far my favorites from today.
